ABOUT THE ARTIST
- Bruce McRae Campbell is an Artist residing in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
- A Multi-Instrumentalist, Composer, Sound Engineer and Producer, Campbell also involves himself in all things creative.
- From life-size Acrylic painting of Famous Monsters on Styrofoam insulation sheets to the publishing of two full-length Comic books to his mastering of the digital painting medium and creating a Vancouver scene series, a Cat series, a Frankenstein series and a collection of Classic Monsters and of course CROWS using various digital paint programs.
- With the digital paint process, his computer screen is his canvas and his mouse is his brush (and yeah, he uses a mouse to digitally paint!)
- Campbell also owned and ran a website for 15 years and took on a personae called Spookhaus , giving away over 150 free mp3s, music, soundscapes, that have been used in film and videos.
- He most recently collaborated with Ace Luthier Mike Menkes to create the FrankenBass ; an owed to and tribute to Campbell's two greatest life long passions; The Frankenstein Monster and Bass playing, which is his main instrument and accompanied him in many a band through the 80s and 90s and early 2000s
- 61-year old Campbell's Passions and Creativity have extended into his love for Crows.
-
- It all started with offering those hungry Corvids some scraps of food while eating in the car or walking about during lunch breaks at a Government job he was employed with for 30 years.
- The Crows would eventually follow him and recognize him, not just one or three but sometimes hundreds!
- It became a daily ritual, at least while he was around his job site.
- Eventually He retired and really got to know the Crows in his neighborhood on his daily walks around The DTES and Vancouver's Gastown. feeding them shelled peanuts, cashews and variety of mixed nuts and grapes. He figured if he was going to feed them and connect with them, give them something natural and unprocessed and above all, tasty
- During the last 5 years and an almost daily visitation and feeding of Crows, Campbell used an iPhone 8 and an iPhone 16 to capture some stunning photographic moments in his connection with Crows in his neighborhood, Railtown as well as surrounding areas including C.R.A.B. Park, Gore and Union street to Andy Livingston Park and west up Dunsmuir street in Vancouver.
- The Crows would instantly recognize him in these areas and even when he would travel beyond, Crows just seemingly know of Campbell's reputation.
- Because of this intimate connection with hundreds, if not thousands of Crows in the east Vancouver area , Campbell has had them taking peanuts directly from his hand and has trained many to catch peanuts in mid air and when they are mere feet away with their beaks open wide and most importantly he has captured these amazing and intelligent birds in hundreds of photos that has inspired Campbell to create his many works of Arts in various mediums.
- Enjoy The Urban Crow Art Show and here's hope that it inspires some who truly love these most popular rural and Urban Bird and especially those who never gave Crows much thought..... Look around and up to the trees and the wires and the sky as you walk about , you just might find a guardian Angel, a kindred spirit and a lifelong friend whenever you enter their neighborhood.
